A suburb of Charleston, Summerville was settled after the Revolutionary War and was named Pineland Village in 1785. Summerville became a town in 1847 and was named a top spot for the recovery of lung and throat disorders in 1899 by the Congress of Physicians, due in part to the presence of so many trees that released turpentine derivatives into that area. The area today plays host to the Flowertown Festival. Held each spring it is the largest arts and crafts festival in South Carolina.

Berkeley County deputies arrest 3 in Summerville drug bust

Berkeley County deputies say they were searching for a wanted suspect in Summerville when they smelled burning marijuana and wound up arresting three people. Officers arrested Bryan Anthony Mizzell, 47, Marie E. Andaluz, 44, and Tracey Elaine Roark-Cannon, 37 at a home in the 500 block of Sassafras Lane on Friday, according to a post on the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office's Facebook page.

South Carolina man charged with murder in death of friend

A South Carolina man who told 911 dispatchers that he shot his friend in self-defense has now been charged with murder. Local media reported that Berkeley County sheriff's deputies said this week they have charged 34-year-old Wade David Williamson III with murder, a week after a shooting at his home near Summerville.
