Ralph Edward Veach, a longtime resident of Southern California, died Aug. 21 at his home in Redlands, from complications of diabetes. He was 66. After his military service, he moved to Southern California and had lived in Rancho Cucamonga and Rialto as well as Redlands.

Jury finds man guilty of lesser charges in Rialto stabbing

A Chino man has been found guilty of lesser charges in the deadly stabbing of one man and wounding of another in a May 2008 fight over vandalism to a friend's car. A jury found Hector Maurice Rueda III guilty of voluntary manslaughter and attempted voluntary manslaughter in the death of Joe Ortiz, 20, and wounding of Jose Alejandro Gomez, 21, both of Rialto, during deliberations in a trial in Fontana Superior Court, according to court records.

Highland invites comment on proposal to increase trash rates

Highland is the last city to go to an automated trash pick up starting March 5. Highland property owners this month can weigh in on a plan to raise trash rates 5.5 percent under a new contract with Burrtec Waste Industries Inc. The Highland City Council will hold a public hearing Aug. 14 on a proposal to increase residential trash rates from $23.91 to $25.23 per month.

Three-year-old found gun, shot himself in face

A 41-year-old grandmother is the center of a police and Child Protective Services investigation after the woman's 3-year-old grandson got ahold of a .22-caliber handgun and shot himself in the face. Kimberly Gray Doss, the child's guardian, was in another room when her grandson found the gun on Halloween morning.

Construction is well under way at the restaurant, which was announced a year ago.
