CHOC to open new autism center with $10 million gift from Newport Beach foundation

Children's Hospital of Orange County announced Wednesday, April 25, its plan to open a center to provide services to children with autism spectrum disorders using a $10-million gift from Newport Beach-based Thompson Family Foundation. The Thompson Autism Center - a two-story, 20,000-square-foot facility - is set to open in early 2019, just a few blocks away from CHOC's main campus at 170 S. Main St. The center will provide programs for autistic children of all age groups and also serve as a bridge to transitional services after age 22, which is typically when individuals with autism stop receiving services from schools, said CHOC neurologist and center director Dr. Tom Megerian.
