Three additional doctors have been charged in three new cases for their roles in a 15-year-long health care fraud scheme that involved more than $40 million in illegal kickbacks paid to doctors and other medical professionals in exchange for referring thousands of patients who received spinal surgeries. As a result of the kickback scheme, more than $580 million in fraudulent bills were submitted, mostly to California's worker compensation system.

$3.75 million great white shark bill approved in California budget

A bill that would give $3.75 million to the Shark Lab in Long Beach for high-tech research passed the Legislature on Thursday, June 14. The funding will go toward technology such as underwater robots that can record shark behavior, drones that can search for great whites from above, and more receivers and tags that can track sharks' migratory behaviors. Assemblymember Patrick O'Donnell announced the milestone on Thursday for Assembly Bill 2191 - formally called the White Shark Population Monitoring and Beach Safety Program - which requested funding to research the increased number of shark sightings along the California coast.

Police rule out kidnapping in North Long Beach, van and driver located

Hours after warning of a possible kidnapping in North Long Beach, police on Friday located the driver of a van they circulated photos of and said no such crime occurred, though they are now investigating the incident as a prostitution case. The search began after someone called 911 about 6:20 a.m. to report seeing a man grab a teenage girl by her waist and put her into the front seat of a van near Artesia Boulevard and Butler Avenue, police said.

LONG BEACH - Authorities are investigating the possible kidnapping of a teen girl into a van in Long Beach Friday morning. According to Long Beach police, a Hispanic girl between 13 and 16 years of age may have been abducted by a man in a van in the area of Artesia Boulevard and Butler Avenueat around 6:20 a.m. A witness reported that a girl was walking east on Artesia under the 91 Freeway overpass when a black man in his 30s or 40s snatched her by her waist and dragged her into the front seat of a van, police said.

Detours for northbound 710 Freeway now in effect

Motorists seeking access to the northbound 710 Freeway from the downtown area will now need to take a detour, as the previous transition ramp for vehicles traveling east from Terminal Island along Ocean Boulevard was closed last Saturday. The old connector will soon be demolished to make space for a new ramp for the Gerald Desmond Bridge Replacement Project, according to officials from that project and the Port of Long Beach.
