About: garden grove, california

Bradley Nowell (Sublime), who grew up in the city, wrote the song "Garden Grove" about it. Garden Grove was founded in 1874 by Alonzo Cook. Until the arrival of the railroad in 1905, the area was only a small rural crossroads. The railroad allowed the town to prosper with crops of orange, walnuts, chili peppers, and strawberries. The Long Beach earthquake of 1933 destroyed much of Garden Grove's business district. Fortunately for the city, the post-WWII boom led to rapid development and the city was finally incorporated in 1956.
