Fontana man who pretended to be ICE agent sentenced to prison for possessing destructive device

A Fontana man who impersonated an ICE agent and possessed a cache of weapons and destructive devices was sentenced Monday to two years in federal prison. Matthew Ryan Johnston, 26, was sentenced by Judge Percy Anderson in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles for possession of an unregistered destructive device, according to a Department of Justice news release.

Prosecutors say a man who impersonated an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent and kept a stash of guns, grenades and thousands of rounds of ammunition is going to prison. Investigators say Johnston wore a phony ICE uniform, carried a fake badge and at one point used police lights to chase a car, causing a traffic collision.

A Fontana man was among a trio arrested Thursday morning by federal agents with a grand jury indictment alleging the men's involvement in an immigration fraud scheme that illegally charged Mexican nationals thousands of dollars for work visas and other expenses upon arriving in the United States. A man was sent to a hospital with life-threatening injuries after being hit by a bus on Monday afternoon in Fontana, authorities said. At 4:24 p.m., Fontana police responded to a traffic collision in the area of Sierra and Upland Avenues involving a male pedestrian and an Omni-Trans Bus, police said.
