Florence was thinly settled by subsistence farmers who produced indigo, cotton, and timber, which was then shipped down the Pee Dee River to Georgetown's port to be exported. It was founded as a railroad hub and a junction for major railroad companies such as the Wilmington and Manchester, the Northeastern, and the Cheraw and Darlington.
