About: el monte, california

"Welcome to Friendly El Monte, " is the city’s slogan, but this oasis in the middle of the dry San Gabriel Valley is also known as the end of the Santa Fe Trail. "El Monte" means "meadow" in Spanish – not "mountain" which many people misinterpret. Horse racing fans will be happy to know that Willie Shoemaker, the sport’s most famous jockey, went to El Monte High School – before dropping out to work in nearby horse stables. Even TV’s most famous horse, Mr. Ed, was foaled here in 1949 and named, "Bamboo Harvester. "
