Located 13 miles NE of downtown Los Angeles, Arcadia is best known as the home of the Santa Anita racetrack. During the war years, the racetrack was used as an Internment camp for Japanese Americans until they were moved further east and the make shift barracks were then used by the army. Arcadia boomed in the 50's and 60's and in that time the Los Angeles Arboretum and Botanical Gardens were created. The McDonald brothers actually opened there first restaurant in Arcadia in the 30's before moving on to open a small hamburger restaurant chain using their surname.

Former Muir teacher to stand trial in murder case

A former John Muir High School English teacher should be tried on charges of murdering his ex-wife's boyfriend in Arcadia last March, a judge ruled Thursday. Pasadena Superior Court Judge Laura F. Priver found "sufficient cause" to hold Brandon Michael Landreth, 30, of Pasadena to answer to charges of first degree murder and set an arraignment for Jan. 30. Citing testimony that Landreth had made threats against another of his ex-wife's lovers, Priver also set Landreth's bail at $5 million.

Couple who ran an illegal San Gabriel maternity ward identified

A source close to the city's investigation of an illegally modified home catering to Asian maternity tourists said Thursday the operation was run by a couple who leased the townhome from its owner. Although owner Dwight Chang, also of Arcadia was issued an $800 citation for building code violations, the couple was not cited by code enforcement officers.
