Sewer "calamity" averted on city's southside and other Mission City Council matters

On Monday, Mission's city council authorized the expenditure of $90,000 for emergency repairs to the city's Madero Sanitary Sewer Lift Station where Public Works Director Robert Salinas said a routine inspection last week revealed a portion of the more than 30-year-old facility was ready to collapse, posing a potential threat of a major sewer backup in resident's homes. Investigators searching for suspect in October murder near Mission

Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office investigators issued an arrest warrant for a man accused of being involved in a murder near Mission last month. Gerardo Alberto Martinez Gomez, 38, was fatally shot and found lying on the ground on Los Ebanos Road, north of Farm-to-Market Road 2221 near Mission on Oct. 16 at about 10 p.m. Investigators and crime scene specialists gathered evidence and ordered an autopsy last month, according to a Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office news release.

Another hurdle passed in south-side freeway toll road

On Tuesday contractors from across Texas and out of state met with officials of the Hidalgo County Regional Mobility Authority in a mandatory pre-bid meeting to discuss plans for the first 12.2 mile, $168.8 million leg of the beltway that will traverse southwestern Hidalgo County. The deadline for submitting bids on the project is Nov. 10 and the contract will be awarded on Nov. 28 followed by a pre-construction meeting on Jan. 8. Pilar Rodriguez, the HCRMA's executive director, said the agency hopes to start construction in March on the proposed four lane highway known as the 365 Toll Project with a 42-month construction schedule.
