The city of Indio was created out of a need for a stopping point for the Southern Pacific Railroad between Yuma and Los Angeles. The city was established at the halfway point, so that the engines could be cleaned of all the sand taken in and re-filled with water. It was to be named Indian Wells but because several other areas had already taken the name, it was decided to name the city Indio which means "Indian" in Spanish.

Indio: Free Musical Tribute to Veterans

Indio, CA - The 50-member Symphony Orchestra of California Baptist University will honor our nation's veterans with a musical tribute at the Rose Garden at Empire Polo Club at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21. The orchestra, formed in 2012, previously performed a musical salute to veterans at the County Administrative Center in Riverside in 2016. Supervisor V.
