When servers at Lotus Bar & Eatery in Gastonia begin taking orders for brunch every Sunday, they've grown accustomed to seeing disappointed faces. Patrons who attempt to order the traditional bloody mary or mimosa with their meal have been met with rejection, due to the state's longtime ban on businesses serving alcohol before noon on the traditional day of worship.

Someone entered through a window at 1542 Union Road late Tuesday night, then left an investment business and kicked their way into two other businesses who share the building. Among the items stolen from David Masters was a safe with precious possessions.

Belmont leaders set date to vote on Sunday alcohol sales

For the more than a dozen Belmont business owners who expressed - in writing, no less - their desire for local officials to "free the mimosa," there's a personal stake in a regularly scheduled Aug. 7 City Council meeting. Belmont decision makers are expected to vote that day on an ordinance that would allow restaurants and other businesses to begin serving alcohol at 10 a.m. on Sundays, two hours earlier than current city code allows.

Man hired to paint arrested for stealing Updated at

A Gastonia man has been charged in Lincolnton after he allegedly stole two TVs from a residence he was working at.  Curtis Chad Morgan, 42, was arrested on Tuesday by the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office and charged with felony breaking and entering, felony larceny and possession of stolen goods. Deputies say Morgan was hired to work on a summer home located on Normal Estates Drive in Denver while the owner of the home was living out of the state.

Police: Man stole and pawned laptops

Glenn Thrash II, 34, was booked into Gaston County Jail on Tuesday afternoon with several charges related to stolen laptops.  Police say Thrash first stole two laptops, a 13-inch Dell laptop and a 17-inch Hewlett Packard laptop, from National Pawn and Jewelry located at 2344 E. Franklin Blvd. in Gastonia.

Man hired to murder woman's husband turns her in, police say

The man Jessica Nichole Philbeck allegedly tried to hire to kill her husband was the one who turned her in, according to police.  Philbeck, 31, appeared in court for her first appearance on charges of solicitation for murder. Police say the Gastonia woman attempted to hire someone to murder her husband, Thomas Grant Pasour.  In court on Tuesday afternoon Philbeck made no statements to the court.

A device used to clean the tracks struck a minivan driven by Gabriel Deitz's grandmother at 10:02 a.m. on Cox Road near N.C. 7 and Ranlo. Gastonia Police responded to the incident and both the driver and Deitz were shaken up.

Police: Gastonia man trespassed on city of Lowell property

A Gastonia man was arrested Saturday afternoon after he allegedly broke into a city of Lowell water treatment facility.  Cameron Luther Owens, 28, was charged with breaking and entering into the water treatment facility located at 98 Saxony Drive in Lowell. Police said in the magistrate's orders that the facility is enclosed to keep out intruders, and for someone to get in would require them to climb over or go under a fence surrounding the facility.  According to police, "the offense was committed with the intent to disrupt the normal operation of the facility and involved an act that placed the offender and others on the premises at risk of serious bodily injury."

Crowders shuttle bus rides mostly sans passengers

A new shuttle bus that intends to reduce auto congestion and overflowing parking lots at Crowders Mountain State Park garnered little public interest in its first day of service.
