The Downey Symphony will present its annual free concert in Furman Park at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 26, under the baton of music director Sharon Lavery. The concert will open with familiar tunes from Broadway and film musicals, including "Phantom of the Opera," "Les Miz," "The Sound of Music" and "American Tail."

South Gate

A Downey police officer suffering burn injuries when an explosion occurred during a training exercise in South Gate on Wednesday evening. Cpl. Ed Hano, a canine officer and 17-year veteran of the Downey Police Department, was transported to a local hospital after the explosion.

Friday, June 16: Officers stopped a car in the 7900 block of Phlox that was wanted in an attempt burglary that occurred last month at a local jewelry store. Evidence was located in the vehicle further tying this car and the driver to the previous burglary.

Man struck, killed by Green Line train at MTA station in Downey

A man was killed when he was struck by an MTA Green Line train at a station in Downey, authorities said Saturday. The accident was reported just before 10 p.m. Friday at the Green Line Lakewood Station, at Lakewood Boulevard and the 105 Freeway, said Ramon Montenegro of the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department's Transit Services Bureau.

Responding to Craigslist ad, police seize 3,000 lbs. of illegal fireworks

Detectives recently received a tip informing them that illegal fireworks were being advertised for sale in Downey on Craigslist. Following up on this information, undercover detective arranged to meet with seller Jose Zepeda at a local restaurant parking lot and purchased illegal fireworks on Wednesday, June 21. A second purchase of illegal fireworks was arranged on Friday, June 23 and Jose's brother, Juan Zepeda arrived at the location and was taken into custody for selling illegal fireworks to undercover detectives.
