Harlingen is located in southernmost Texas in the heart of the Rio Grande Valley. It is about thirty miles from the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. In 1904 Lon C. Hill founded the town Harlingen after the city of the name in the Netherlands. At first the town was mostly agricultural. It had major crops of vegetables and cotton. However, in WWII military installations caused the population to double, and it has become an industrial center for the area. It is home to the Valley Race Park which is a racetrack for Greyhound dogs.
