Report: Suspect traveling 120 mph before crash with trooper

Highway Patrol Trooper J.P. Harris was injured Wednesday night in a hit-and-run wreck that landed a Charlotte man in jail. Dedric Lamont McManus, 19, at one point was traveling 120 mph along I-85 near the N.C. 7 exit in Gastonia when Highway Patrol troopers attempted to stop a 2017 Hyundia Sonata he was driving, according to a citation.

Long-time bargain hunters and fans of the A&E show "Storage Wars" turned out for a storage auction on Wednesday morning, all hoping to find a treasure. Unfortunately it was slim pickings at Furniture Storage Bins, located at 507 W. Franklin Blvd. in Gastonia.

This week, traces of mold and mildew were found in some classrooms on furniture and other surfaces, according to a message sent to parents Wednesday from school Principal Crystal Houser. According to Houser, cleaning crews were at the school Wednesday to "take care of the problem." "As a preventative measure, the temperature and humidity levels inside the school are being monitored daily," said Houser.

Java House hopes to expand base with food

A coffeehouse now hopes to attract more customers to its downtown Gastonia location by offering pizza, hamburgers and pancakes alongside a hazelnut latte or other brew. Adina Rutenberg and her brother, Josh Rutenberg, decided to expand the menu at their joint venture, Java House, located at 200 Main Ave. "We have a completely full kitchen now," said Josh Rutenberg.

Members of a wrecking service stepped deep into some Gaston County woods Sunday to retrieve a badly wrecked motorcycle after its driver ran off the road. Troopers were dispatched to the scene on Ratchford Drive near Floyd Road southeast of Gastonia at 5:08 p.m. after a driver ran off the right side of the road and collided with several trees before coming to rest on the wood line.
