Bradley Nowell (Sublime), who grew up in the city, wrote the song "Garden Grove" about it. Garden Grove was founded in 1874 by Alonzo Cook. Until the arrival of the railroad in 1905, the area was only a small rural crossroads. The railroad allowed the town to prosper with crops of orange, walnuts, chili peppers, and strawberries. The Long Beach earthquake of 1933 destroyed much of Garden Grove's business district. Fortunately for the city, the post-WWII boom led to rapid development and the city was finally incorporated in 1956.

Coroner identifies driver, good Samaritan who died in Garden Grove freeway crashes

The Orange County coroner's office has released the name of two men who died early Monday morning , Oct. 30 in crashes on the 22 freeway in Garden Grove. One of the men died after his car hit a freeway wall near the Brookhurst Street off-ramp while the other died after he stopped to help and was struck by another vehicle.

Man found legally sane in fatal stabbing at Garden Grove tea house

SANTA ANA An Orange County Superior Court jury on Monday determined that a 24-year-old Anaheim man was sane when he fatally stabbed a janitor more then 20 times and stomped on the man's head before moping up the crime scene and calling 911. The jury, on Oct. 3, had convicted Robert Gabriel Rodgers of first-degree murder for the Nov. 14, 2014 killing Caesar Ramirez-Raphael, 24, in the Volcano Tea House, which has since closed.
