About: florence, south carolina

Florence was thinly settled by subsistence farmers who produced indigo, cotton, and timber, which was then shipped down the Pee Dee River to Georgetown's port to be exported. It was founded as a railroad hub and a junction for major railroad companies such as the Wilmington and Manchester, the Northeastern, and the Cheraw and Darlington. Instead of shipping products to Georgetown, Florence began using the railroads to supply its cotton, timber and tobacco. As industry grew, Florence has become a business hub with textile, pharmaceutical, paper, manufacturing and agricultural products.
