About: fairmont, west virginia

The county seat for Marion County, West Virginia, is Fairmont, which is also nicknamed, "The Friendly City." Once known as "Middletown," the name "Fairmont" eventually took over, after being a contraction of "Fair Mountain." Most famously, the city is known as the first place to publically observe the very first Father's Day, on July 5, 1908. The celebration was meant to honor the 200-plus fathers lost in the Monongah Mining disaster a few months earlier. Alabama head coach Nick Saban and Olympic gold medal-winning gymnast Mary Lou Retton both called Fairmont home at times.

The Historic George Pinkney Morgan House

The only freestanding early Morgan home left in the Monongahela River valley came within inches of demolition in the 1980s-and it has the cracked front steps to prove it. When David and Sarah Morgan moved their family west in the early 1770s from the Upper Potomac to the Monongahela River valley, they staked out a rise in a broad, squarish loop in the river.
