Federal prosecutors say a California man was sentenced to 10 years in prison without parole for his role in the distribution of large quantities of methamphetamine in the Springfield. Thirty-seven-year-old Romulo Frank Delatorre, of Downey, California, was sentenced Friday for helping to ship methamphetamine from California to Springfield between June and September 2015.

A former Downey Unified School District student has been identified as one of the over 500 people injured in the Las Vegas Shooting that took place Sunday. Ariel Romero, of Bellflower, was attending the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival with her brother and her brother's girlfriend when shots began raining down on the 22,000 person crowd from the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.

The city of Downey has reached a tentative agreement with the Downey Police Officers' Association on a new 3-year contract for rank-and-file police officers. The contract, which will be voted on by the City Council in a special meeting Monday, is retroactive to July 1 and would give officers a series of pay raises: a- a 2% raise effective Aug. 28, 2017; a- a second 2% raise effective June 18, 2018; a- and a 3% salary bump effective July 1, 2019.
