Baldwin Park is located in southwestern California, near Los Angeles. The land where the city sits today was once owned by the San Gabriel Mission and was used for cattle grazing. A community was established and by 1880 it was referred to as Vineland. In 1906 the city changed its name to Baldwin Park in honor of Elias J. "Lucky" Baldwin, a prominent California businessman and investor during the latter half of the nineteenth century. Baldwin Park was eventually incorporated in 1956, becoming the 47th incorporated city in California.

Federal audit finds problems with California's graduation rate calculations

The report by the U.S. Education Department's Office of Inspector General, released Wednesday, looked at samples of graduation-rate data from the class of 2013-14 and found that quality control was lacking in self-reporting by school districts. Baldwin Park man sentenced for shooting at El Monte police, motorcyclist

A Baldwin Park man who shot at a motorcyclist, then opened fire on pursing El Monte police officers over the course of two days last year received a sentence of more than 45 years in prison this week, authorities said. Richard Refugio Cortez, 27, was sentenced to 45 years and eight months in state prison on Wednesday, the anniversary of his crimes, which took place Jan. 10 and 11 , 2016, Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office spokesman Ricardo Santiago said.

An elderly La Puente woman died after being struck by a car, which then fled the scene, as she was crossing the street in Bassett late Saturday, officials said. The deadly collision took place about 6:50 p.m. along Don Julian Road, just east of Workman Mill Road , in the unincorporated county area just outside of Industry, California Highway Patrol officials said.
