Located roughly 136 miles north of New York City, it is the state capital. In 1664, the English named it Albany in honor of the Duke of York and Albany. Students near the downtown campus of the University at Albany were urged to stay indoors shortly before 3 p.m. Thursday for a report of an armed robbery. Albany police spokesman Officer Steve Smith said a man wearing dark clothes displayed a handgun at the Quail Street Market, located at 167 Quail, at 2:20 p.m. demanding money from the register.
